Some time ago I warned Majority Leader Reid and Speaker Pelosi that they were making a mistake in not clarifying to their supporters that they would not withdraw funds for US troops in Iraq. Now, in explaining that Senate Democrats will seek to force additional votes on Iraq, Reid admits the truth of the observation:
Self-praise stinks, so we’ll leave it at that, and turn instead to the three amendments Senator Reid will try to have considered on the defense authorization bill which will soon be before the Senate:
These amendments represent nothing new, of course. It’s a natural continuation of the Democrats’ strategy of trying to pound the president and Senate Republicans into submission, by constant pressure for withdrawal. They’re encouraged by political consultants who tell them that even though they are suffering in the polls now, they will be rewarded eventually. The key for the president and supporters of the war is to ensure that General Petraeus’ surge has a chance to be fully implemented and evaluated. The mission of Democrats in Congress is to prevent that from happening. It has been noted frequently but cannot be omitted now: our enemies in Iraq can only be heartened at the knowledge that Democrats in Washington are completely supportive of their plan.
