Suspect in German cinema shooting shot dead; no injuries

German officials say no one else was injured when a masked gunman barricaded himself inside a cinema Thursday and was shot and killed by authorities, despite initial reports that anywhere from 25 to 50 people had been wounded.

Police had said around 3 p.m. local time that there was a “threat situation” at the Kinopolis cinema in a complex in the southwest German town of Viernheim. Police spokesman Bernd Hochstaedte said police were on the scene for roughly three hours.

Four shots were fired by the gunman during the incident, but no one was injured on site until the gunman was shot dead, Hesse state interior minister Peter Beuth said.

The Bild newspaper reported that the injuries to those at the complex were caused by police tear gas, not by gunfire.
