Jeff Sessions travels to El Salvador amid Trump tensions

Attorney General Jeff Sessions will be in the city of San Salvador, El Salvador, on Thursday to discuss transnational gangs, immigration and drug trafficking.

According to the Department of Justice, the attorney general will be in meetings related to the MS-13 transnational gang, immigration, drugs and human trafficking, and visit the FBI’s Transnational Anti-Gang Task force.

Sessions will meet with President Salvador Sanchez Ceren and the attorneys general from the countries of El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, as well as give remarks at a law enforcement graduation ceremony.

The trip comes less than 24 hours after Sessions issued a statement on behalf of his violent crime and public safety task force, hours after leaving the White House for a routine meeting.

In his Wednesday statement, Sessions said reducing crime is still a “top priority for President Trump and the Department of Justice.”

The tensions between Trump and Sessions are at an all-time high after the president told the New York Times last week he was disappointed in Sessions’ decision to recuse himself from the Russia investigation. Trump echoed that sentiment in a news conference this week.

On Twitter, Trump has also called Sessoins “beleaguered” and “weak.”

Sessions has made it clear he intends to remain as head of the Justice Department, even with his future in doubt. Trump has denied letting Sessions “twist in the wind” and coyly said “time will tell” of Sessions’ future.

Meanwhile, Sessions has shown no sign of slowing down as attorney general, releasing new policy dictating the conditions for how sanctuary cities will receive federal funds. He is also reportedly ready to unveil new department investigations into leaks amid pressure from the White House.

According to a Justice Department official, Sessions’ trip to El Salvador has been in the works for a while.
