Trey Gowdy: If Comey memos had ‘important’ info, Democrats would have leaked them six months ago

If the memos written by former FBI Director James Comey had anything “really important” in them, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., quipped they would have been leaked six months ago by the Democrats.

The South Carolina Republican appeared in a Fox News interview Friday, and was asked to comment on whether he thought the memos leaked Thursday did anything besides corroborate Comey’s prior testimony.

“I read the memo six months ago,” he said in reply to host Bret Baier. “I think it’s important for all members of Congress and ultimately the public to see them.”

He then reasoned that if “there was anything really, really important, the Democrats would have leaked what they lead six months ago,” knocking his colleagues across the isle for a reputation of targeted leaks.

Gowdy went on to critique the memos, in which Comey recounted his interactions with President Trump before he was fired in the spring of last year.

“I do think it’s important that President Trump said if any of my associates were involved in this collusion, I want to know it. I think it’s important that the Russia cloud the Democrats keep talking about was the salacious allegation of sexual misconduct. It was not the interference,” Gowdy said, referring to Trump’s apparent concern about the “golden showers” claim in the salacious and unverified Trump dossier.

“We learned more about Jim Comey as he goes on his morality tour over the next couple of weeks,” Gowdy added.

Gowdy was one of three GOP chairmen who pressed the Justice Department into handing over the memos to Congress this week. Within an hour of doing so, the memos had leaked to the press.
