Stimulus update 2022: Surprise one-time checks worth up to $1,657 being sent out in Pennsylvania

Thousands of older or disabled Pennsylvanians who received a property tax or rent rebate in 2021 are again receiving financial relief.

Gov. Tom Wolf announced on Aug. 24 that those who already received the rebates would get an additional, one-time payment equal to 70% of their original rebate, up to $1,657.50. The Department of Revenue currently has 361,042 eligible recipients.

Revenue Secretary Dan Hassell said in the statement that the one-time payments, originally scheduled to go out at the beginning of September, would begin to go out this week as the department is ahead of schedule.

TAX REBATES 2022: DIRECT CHECK PAYMENTS WORTH UP TO $300 TO BE SENT OUT IN JUST WEEKS

“At the same time, we are asking claimants who are expecting a paper check in the mail to be patient,” Hassell said. “It will take several weeks to mail all of the checks for the one-time bonus rebates, whereas those who elected direct deposit on their application forms should see their bonus rebates sooner.”

The one-time bonuses are part of the governor’s law that he signed in early August, providing financial relief to those most affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The governor’s office will use funds from the American Rescue Plan to fund the bonuses, approximately $140 million.

Those who have already received their property tax or rent rebate can expect the one-time bonus to be delivered in the same method as requested on the rebate application form, such as direct deposit or check. People whose rebate applications are still being processed will receive the rebate and the one-time bonus at the same time.

“I am proud that bonus rebates are starting to roll out to Pennsylvanians in need this week,” Wolf said. “These bonus rebates will help older adults and Pennsylvanians with disabilities stay in their homes.”

Pennsylvania is among many states that are providing rebates or one-time payments to alleviate financial burdens caused by the pandemic. Connecticut, Illinois, New York, and Rhode Island have offered everything from one-time payments for households claiming dependents to monthly $500 payments.
