House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) announced he selected 10 GOP lawmakers to serve on the new House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party on Monday.
Republicans have placed a strong emphasis on combating threats from China, with the House GOP previously having launched a task force to investigate issues like intellectual property theft and national security threats to the U.S. and its allies.

Reps. Rob Wittman (R-VA), Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO), Andy Barr (R-KY), Dan Newhouse (R-WA), John Moolenaar (R-MI), Darin LaHood (R-IL), Neal Dunn (R-FL), Jim Banks (R-IN) and Dusty Johnson (R-SD) were tapped to sit on the newly formed panel that is set to be chaired by Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI).
“The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is a threat to American democracy. The United States is engaged in a great power struggle with the CCP, and we must respond with tough policies that will protect our farmland, rebuild our national supply chains, stand up for human rights, and safeguard American sovereignty,” Newhouse said in a statement.

“I look forward to serving on this committee and will continue leading the charge against the CCP’s efforts to buy up American farmland to ensure our agriculture industry and food supply chain is protected from any and all attacks, overt or otherwise, against them,” he added.
The House passed a resolution to create the panel with strong bipartisan support in a 365-65 vote.
