2 US service members killed during raid in Afghanistan, 1 wounded

Two U.S. service members were killed on Thursday after coming under attack during a raid in Afghanistan, the Pentagon said Thursday, and another service member has been wounded.

The raid took place in Nangarhar province of Afghanistan while U.S. forces were fighting alongside Afghan forces against the ISIS-Khorasan group.

“Their identities, service, and unit affiliations are being withheld pending next of kin notification,” Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis said.

“The fight against ISIS-K is important for the world, but sadly, it is not without sacrifice,” said Gen. John Nicholson, commander of U.S. Forces-Afghanistan. “On behalf of all U.S. Forces and our coalition partners, I offer our deepest sympathies to the families, friends, and fellow service members of our fallen comrades.”

The deaths mark the second and third service members killed in Afghanistan this year. Staff Sgt. Mark R. De Alencar was mortally wounded April 8, also in Nangarhar, when fighting the ISIS-Khorasan group. Nangarhar is also where the “mother of all bombs” was dropped on April 13.
