After months of silence, Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli endorsed Republican George Allen’s U.S. Senate bid Wednesday, a day after Allen had already won Republican Party’s nomination in a four-way primary.
Cuccinelli, who made no endorsement during the primary, offered a strong, yet symbolic, case for why Republicans should rally around Allen against Democrat Tim Kaine in the fall.
“George Allen’s record towers above Tim Kaine’s, and I’m proud to stand with George because I know he has the leadership and experience our commonwealth needs in the U.S. Senate,” Cuccinelli said. “It’s time for all Virginians to stand behind George Allen for victory in November.”
Cuccinelli, a Tea Party darling, also withheld his endorsement in the Republican presidential primary, even though only two of the presidential contenders made Virginia’s ballot.
“Ken is a key voice in our fight against Obamacare, and I’m grateful for his partnership in our shared goal of defeating the Obama-Kaine agenda that is hurting Virginia’s small businesses and families,” Allen said.
