Trump to nominate Ryan McCarthy for Army undersecretary

President Trump announced his intent to nominate Ryan McCarthy, a former Army Ranger, to be undersecretary of the Army, the second-highest civilian position in the service.

The announcement came in the form of a statement Tuesday evening from the White House. It said that McCarthy has recently served as vice president of the Sustainment Program for the F-35 program at Lockheed Martin.

McCarthy was a member of the 75th Ranger Regiment during the invasion of Afghanistan.

McCarthy also served a special assistant to former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, and before that was a professional staff member on the House Committee on International Relations, which currently is called the Foreign Affairs Committee. He also worked for the Hong Kong Shanghai Bank Corporation in its North American arm.

The announcement comes following two of Trump’s nominees for Army secretary, Vincent Viola and Mark Green, withdrew their names from the process. If confirmed, McCarthy could serve as acting Army secretary in the absence of one of Trump’s future nominees being confirmed.
