Prosecutors charged six police officers in Atlanta after video showed law enforcement violently pulling two college students from a car during protests over the death of George Floyd.
Five of the officers are charged with aggravated assault, as well as other charges.
Two of the officers were fired over the weekend, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said Sunday as she called footage of the incident “really shocking to watch.”
A video showed a group of police officers in riot gear approaching a vehicle and yelling orders on Saturday night at a man in the driver’s seat and a woman sitting next to him.
An officer used a stun gun on Taniyah Pilgrim as she was trying to get out of the car, and then, officers pulled her from the vehicle.
Another officer yelled at the driver, Messiah Young, to put the car in park and open the window. An officer repeatedly hit his window with a baton, and another officer broke it.
An officer used a stun gun on Young and pulled him from the vehicle. Officers claimed Young had a gun, but no gun was recovered.
The couple did not appear to be fighting the police.
Bottoms said Pilgrim was released without charges, and she would order the charges against Young to be dropped. A police report said Young was charged with attempting to elude police and driving with a suspended license.
“I feel a little safer now that these monsters are off the street and no longer able to terrorize anyone else,” Young said Tuesday.
“I’m so happy that they’re being held accountable for their actions,” Pilgrim added.
