Billionaire draws outrage for quarantine post featuring superyacht ‘isolated in the Grenadines’

DreamWorks Pictures co-founder David Geffen sparked outrage after posting on Instagram about being quarantined on his superyacht during the coronavirus pandemic.

The billionaire posted photos of his view of the Caribbean from the yacht he purchased for $590 million, saying, “Sunset last night…isolated in the Grenadines avoiding the virus. I’m hoping everybody is staying safe.” Geffen’s Instagram account has since been made private.

News outlets and Twitter users pushed back on his post, calling it tone-deaf in light of people grappling with the coronavirus, which has infected nearly 125,000 people in the United States.

“David Geffen is worth 8 billion dollars! For God’s sake help this country get ventilators, our health workers masks and the medical supplies they need! Or no, just stay on your f—ing yacht instagramming. This is just shameful and grotesque,” The View co-host Meghan McCain tweeted.

Others reacted with similar sentiments.

Film producer Robby Starbuck tweeted, “David Geffen’s thought process: ‘Hey you know what, millions are losing their jobs, can’t pay their rent and they’re worried about a deadly pandemic, I bet they’d love to know how I’m doing. Fire up the copter so we can take some more pics of my yacht! They’ll love this!!!'”

Entertainment outlet the A.V. Club also criticized the billionaire, running the headline: Hey poors: David Geffen wants to show you his yacht.”
