Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a bus carrying Coptic Christians in Egypt on Friday, killing 26 people and injuring 25, including some children, according to state media.
The passengers were traveling to the Monastery of St. Samuel the Confessor when they were attacked.
The monastery is located in Minya province, south of Cairo.
According to the BBC, eight to 10 gunmen wearing military uniforms stopped the bus and then opened fire. They then fled the scene in three vehicles.
It’s unclear who was responsible for the shooting. However, the Islamic State has targeted Coptic Christians in the past, including in two attacks at Palm Sunday services in April.
Roughly 10 percent of Egypt’s population is Coptic Christian, and have faced increased persecution and discrimination in the country.
