Sen. Rand Paul cancels DirectTV subscription after satellite service drops OANN

Republican Sen. Rand Paul announced that he canceled his DirectTV subscription Monday after the satellite TV service said it would not renew its contract with One America News Network on Friday.

The Kentucky Republican took to Twitter to criticize DirectTV.

“I just cancelled my home Direct TV,” Paul tweeted. “Why give money to people who hate us?”

The news of DirectTV canceling OANN has drawn social media criticism from a variety of conservative voices.

Author Nick Adams noted that the satellite service’s move to cancel OANN is further proof of “cancel culture.”

“Cancel culture is destroying our country!” Adams wrote on Twitter. “DIRECTV must be held accountable for canceling OAN! BOYCOTT AT&T and DIRECTV!”

Outspoken Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert questioned the timing of DirectTV’s announcement.

“Pretty convenient that this comes within a week after Biden begged companies to silence ‘misinformation’, meaning his opposition,” Boebert posted on Twitter. “I stand with OANN!”

Republican Rep. Jim Jordan also tweeted a list of conservative people and outlets who have been canceled on various social media platforms.

Critics of OANN, including 16 civil rights, human rights, and media justice organizations, have called on TV distributors to drop the network for spreading disinformation.

John Bergmayer, legal director for the advocacy group Public Knowledge, wrote in a blog post in November that OANN should be dropped for spreading lies.

“The fact that [OANN is] consistently giving airtime to conspiracy theories and misinformation on COVID-19, moves it from a participant in the marketplace of ideas to a peddler of toxic lies,” Bergmayer wrote. “We therefore support the call for AT&T to drop OAN from its programming line up.”

OANN’s contract with DirectTV, which is set to expire in April, has been a primary source for the network’s revenue, according to a Reuters report.
