In a widely expected move, the Baltimore City Council?s vacancy committee nominated Sharon Green Middleton to fill an open seat in the Sixth District.
Middleton was nominated by Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.
“She has a history of service, and a commitment to the city of Baltimore,” Rawlings-Blake said before nominating Middleton, a Democrat.
Middleton, a 30-year state employee, retired from the Maryland Department of Education.
Middleton, 52, is the wife of Glen Middleton ? executive director of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 67 in Baltimore.
The full City Council must approve Middleton at a special meeting on Monday. She may cast the deciding vote on the bill that would ban smoking in bars and restaurants. Middleton said she would run for the seat in the 2007 election.
