A bridge in Rotterdam, Netherlands, will not be dismantled to make room for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s superyacht.
The 417-foot yacht is being built by Dutch firm Oceanco and won’t fit under the bridge, nicknamed “De Hef,” or “the lift,” unless the middle part is dismantled. Bezos committed to paying the cost to dismantle and reassemble the bridge to allow his $50 million yacht.
A local news outlet discovered the bridge plans were abandoned by filing a freedom of information request in accordance with Dutch law. In response, Oceanco “informed the municipality that it is canceling its current logistical plans.”
BIDEN HAS UNLIKELY AND ESCALATING BEZOS BEEF
Over 76,000 signed a Change.org petition to stop the dismantling of the 144-year-old bridge, which was recently renovated in 2017. It has been a historical site since World War II, when it was bombed.
“As long as you are rich enough, there are no restrictions whatsoever. Monuments can be modified and rules — that apply to everyone — lifted,” the petition’s description reads. “The eagerness with which Bezos’ request is being indulged forms a stark contrast to his own rigidness and refusal in providing basic human rights to his warehouse workers (e.g. denying them bathroom breaks and work-recess).”
Another 4,000 protesters planned to pelt the yacht with eggs as it traveled under the bridge.
“Calling all Rotterdammers,” event organizer Pablo Strormann wrote in a since-deleted post on Facebook, “take a box of rotten eggs with you, and let’s throw them en masse at Jeff’s superyacht when it sails through the Hef in Rotterdam.”
