Gas prices: Decrease at the pumps as the cost of gas is lowest since June 2021

The national average price for a gallon of regular gas dropped on Tuesday to $3.063, according to AAA. This is the lowest price for regular gas since June 2021, when the average cost was $3.064 per gallon, according to the Energy Information Administration. Since then, high gas prices at over $3 per gallon (and, for a brief period, over $4 per gallon) have been a financial burden to drivers.

High gas prices have hampered the Biden administration for over three years. After hitting record highs in 2022, the highest in the nation’s history, gas prices began to decrease later in the year. After another spike in 2023, gas prices began declining again in May 2024 and have continued to fall each month.

Yet despite months of decreases at the pumps, gas prices remain higher today than when President-elect Donald Trump was in office between January 2017 and January 2021. With Trump set to take office on Jan. 20, 2025, it remains to be seen what will happen with gas prices during Trump’s second term.

Currently, Hawaii has the most expensive gas prices in the country at $4.573 per gallon. Meanwhile, Oklahoma has the least expensive gas in the nation with a price of $2.565 per gallon.
