Rep. Swalwell’s poll on supporting a ban and buyback of ‘every weapon of war’ backfires

Rep. Eric Swalwell’s poll on his Twitter account asking if people would “support a ban AND buy-back of every weapon of war in America” appeared not to go as planned.

In the two options provided, people could either have chosen, “Yes!Australia already has” or “No. We love Guns > Kids.” With the final tally of 119,342 votes within a 24-hour period, “No. We love Guns > Kids” received 79% of votes.

The California Democrat, who is running for president, has made increasing gun control the main pillar of his campaign. While he is pushing for laws that are popular among Democrats, and even going further than others in the crowded field, it does not appear to have energized people for his campaign.

In the latest CNN poll, he was given an asterisk. Swalwell defended his place in the election on Tuesday because it is still very early and that 57% of the people who were polled did not watch the debate he was in.

CNN anchor John Berman said that was true, but said if you factored in those who did watch the Democratic primary debates, Swalwell is at 0%.

“Yeah, it’s early. You know I got about four minutes total to talk. Others like the vice president and, you know, people who are polling higher right now talked for about 12 to 13 minutes. My goal, frankly, John, was to introduce myself as someone who’s been in Congress for seven years, has been on the Intelligence Committee, has tried to shake things up by leading new members of Congress to Washington,” Swalwell replied
