Stein raises more money for recounts than for her own campaign

In just five days, Green Party candidate Jill Stein raised almost twice as much money for her effort to recount votes in three states than she raised during her entire failed presidential campaign.

According to the campaign’s last financing report on Oct. 19, Stein raised about $3.5 million for her attempt at the White House. Since Nov. 23, when she announced a fundraising blitz to pay for recounts in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, Stein has raised $6.5 million, according to her website.

In a statement released Monday, Stein’s campaign touted donations from 137,000 people averaging about $46 each.

“Our grassroots recount campaign has been supercharged by the incredible support coming in from Americans from across the political spectrum to verify the vote in this election,” she said.

Stein is alleging the machines used to count the votes in those three states had irregularities, and that the touch screens used in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin have security issues. She wants each ballot to be counted by hand, but Wisconsin officials have already denied her request.

Lawyers for the campaign are reportedly seeking a court order to get the ballots counted by hand.

“We must strengthen Americans’ confidence in their democracy and we can only do that if we verify the vote,” she said.

Stein said other presidential candidates have indicated they’ll observe the process, but the Stein campaign isn’t working with any of the other presidential campaigns on the recount. President-elect Trump won all three states in question by slim margins.
