Trump attempt to dismiss $250 million lawsuit denied by New York judge

A New York state judge denied a motion from the Trump family to dismiss a $250 million lawsuit brought forth by state Attorney General Letitia James.

Judge Arthur Engoron ruled against former President Donald Trump on Friday after previously ruling against his arguments last year, CNN reported. The new ruling was particularly harsh, dismissing Trump’s lawyers’ arguments as “frivolous.”

“Reading these arguments was, to quote the baseball sage Lawrence Peter (‘Yogi’) Berra, ‘Deja vu all over again,’” Engoron wrote.

“Sophisticated defense counsel should have known better,” he added. “In its discretion this Court will not impose sanctions, which the Court believes are unnecessary, having made its point.”

Engoron had previously floated sanctioning Trump’s attorneys but believed that the latest criticism would do the job.

James celebrated the victory in a statement obtained by the Washington Post.

“Once again, Donald Trump’s attempts to evade the law have been rejected,” she said.

“We sued Mr. Trump because we found that he engaged in years of extensive financial fraud to enrich himself and cheat the system,” she added. “Today’s decision makes clear that Donald Trump is not above the law and must answer for his actions in court.”

James announced the $250 million lawsuit in September, alleging that Trump’s businesses had purposefully misled banks and others as to the value of his properties and assets. The lawsuit also seeks to ban Trump from ever doing business in New York again.
