The Havre de Grace City Council received an infusion of fresh blood after voters put three new council members on the city?s legislative body.

The top vote-getters in Tuesday?s election were Stephen J. Gamatoria with 882 votes, James P. Miller with 645 and Garrett Lyttle with 469, according to unofficial tallies provided by Havre de Grace Director of Administration Jim Newby.

Bringing up the rear of the election results were Kalman Riegelhaupt, with 418 votes, and incumbent Vincent Way, with 345 votes, Newby said. Way backed out of the election due to health concerns but did not withdraw in time to have his name removed from the ballot.

Gamatoria, Miller and Lyttle will be sworn in at the May 15 City Council meeting.

Of the more than 6,010 registered Havre de Grace voters, only 1,068, plus 11 who cast absentee ballots, voted in Tuesday?s election, a voter turnout of about 18 percent.

“There is a learning curve but I do intend to hit the ground running,” said Gamatoria, 47, a lifelong Havre de Grace resident.

Gamatoria said Wednesday that he plans to familiarize himself with as many council documents as he can before he is sworn in. “The first thing on the agenda is the budget.” Miller, 49, and Lyttle, 59, concurred. Lyttle said he is excited to try and save Havre de Grace taxpayers money.
