Elon Musk willing to spend $6 billion to solve world hunger if UN can explain how

Elon Musk says he is willing to cut a check to the United Nations in order to end world hunger — as long as the public can look over the shopping list.

The billionaire tycoon announced his willingness to help on social media in response to a statement from David Beasley, the director of the U.N’s World Food Program. Beasley told CNN that billionaires such as Musk and Jeff Bezos need to step up and donate $6 billion “to help 42 million people that are literally going to die.”

“If WFP can describe on this Twitter thread exactly how $6B will solve world hunger, I will sell Tesla stock right now and do it,” Musk replied on Twitter, in reference to the interview.

Musk said he would offer up the $6 billion if the U.N. tracked the funds through open source accounting, so the public can see “precisely how the money is spent.”

Beasley responded to Musk’s tweet, saying the U.N. has “the systems in place for transparency and open source accounting.” He also tried to temper expectations for the money’s hypothetical impact, stressing that the $6 billion would not, on its own, end world hunger.

“$6B will not solve world hunger, but it WILL prevent geopolitical instability, mass migration and save 42 million people on the brink of starvation,” Beasley told Musk via tweet. “An unprecedented crisis and a perfect storm due to Covid/conflict/climate crises.”

Musk’s announcement comes after Democrats unveiled details for their planned tax on the unrealized capital gains of the wealthiest people. The plan would capture additional revenue from approximately 700 financial giants, including Musk, Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg.
