MontCo plans to remember Sept. 11 victims

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Montgomery County officials have invited residents to join them at a memorial ceremony on Friday, Sept. 9, at 12:30 p.m. in Courthouse Square Park in Rockville.

County Executive Ike Leggett, County Council President Valerie Ervin and Rockville Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio will join members of Montgomery County’s Fire and Rescue Services, the Montgomery County Police and the City of Rockville Police in the ceremony. The program will  feature music by the Montgomery County Police Gospel Choir and the Fire and Rescue Services Pipe and Drum Corps.

“Our community was directly affected by the terrible loss of life that occurred on that day,” Leggett said. “Eleven Montgomery County residents lost their lives in the attack on the Pentagon, and I ask all of our residents to join me to reflect on those lives that were cut tragically short by that senseless act of hatred.”

The memorial park features 11 benches, one for each of the county residents who died in the attack, each with the victim’s signature and a quote engraved on it. The victims’ names are also inscribed on a plaque on a pavilion in the park.

In addition to the memorial ceremony, there will be an interfaith prayer service on Sept. 11 at 3 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Rockville, at 100 Welsh Park Dr.
