Fairfax school employees suspected of stealing 35,000 laptops

Fairfax County police have arrested and charged two school district employees on suspicion of stealing 35,000 laptops owned by the county.

Franque Minor II, 35, of Maryland and Mario Jones Jr., 21, of Virginia, both employees of the Fairfax County school warehouse, were arrested and charged with embezzlement and larceny with intent to distribute. A third individual, 36-year-old Fadi Atiyeh of Centerville, Virginia, was also arrested.

The massive theft may have begun as far back as November 2020, but Fairfax police only began investigating the matter in March after the school district reported some computers had been improperly moved, the Washington Post reported.

The three alleged culprits reportedly transported the laptops out of the warehouse in a box truck registered to a computer recycling business in Ashburn, Virginia. It was after one such pickup that police arrested Atiyeh, who was driving the truck and worked for the company.
