Preakness: Great way to do business

The running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico has always been one of the most exciting events in horse racing. But the social networking side of the big race is what gets local and national businesses the most excited.

“The Preakness is one of three in the crown jewel of racing [The Triple Crown], and you don?t have to be a horse person to appreciate the race,” said Nancy Hines, vice president of public affairs at Baltimore Area Convention and Visitors Association. “We are fortunate enough to have it in our hometown, and it?s the perfect sales opportunity.”

Businesses and corporations can purchase a corporate tent at the PNC Bank Preakness Village, located ina corner of the infield. The atmosphere resembles an exclusive garden party, and it serves as the ultimate in corporate entertaining and networking.

“What better way to show off Baltimore?s assets than inviting clients to the Preakness?” Hines said. “We can showcase our city at its best with this national event that is watched around the country. It?s a great way to spend the day, network and do business. And corporations all around town do it.”

Anna Smith, group vice president for M&T Bank?s Mid-Atlantic Region, has been using the Preakness to entertain clients for nearly 12 years. “It?s a great opportunity to catch up, and clients appreciate the one-on-one attention,” she said. “It?s a great networking opportunity.”

Hines said sales is all about relationships. “Getting to know your clients and having them get to know you,” she said. “Preakness offers an opportunity to spend an entire day with clients and give them the red-carpet treatment.”

Although M&T Bank doesn?t have a corporate tent this year, Smith said it?s just as much fun to walk around.

“We can go around and check out who?s who. It?s fun to see who?s there, and everyone is in a great mood,” she said. “It?s a win-win situation.”

“If it?s a nice day, people can go from tent to tent to tent and walk the grounds,” Hines said. “There isn?t a better way to spend a Saturday in May than at the Preakness.”
