Robert Mueller will pass the case of former Trump campaign official Rick Gates to the U.S. attorney’s office in the District of Columbia.
Gates was indicted in October 2017 as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election alongside his business associate and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. Now, the Gates case will be handled by D.C.’s U.S. attorney, CNN reported.
He pleaded guilty to conspiracy and making false statements to federal investigators in February 2018 and began cooperating with Mueller’s team. His cooperation with federal prosecutors pushed off his sentencing before U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson.
Mueller completed his investigation Friday and transmitted a confidential report of his findings to Attorney General William Barr. Barr is reviewing the report and told congressional leaders he may be able to provide them with the special counsel’s conclusions as early as this weekend.
Peter Carr, a spokesman for the special counsel, said Mueller will be “concluding his service in the coming days.” A small contingent of staff will stay on board to help with closing the operations of the special counsel’s office, Carr said.
