As the nation awaits the outcome of the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, the Maryland General Assembly has overridden the veto of Gov. Larry Hogan to pass a series of police reforms that many consider to be the most extreme in the country.
They revamp disciplinary procedures for officers accused of misconduct to include allowing the public to examine internal affairs complaints against police, require officers to use “proportional force” in making arrests, and mandate up to 10 years in jail for officers who exceed that threshold.
