Anonymous donor uses Dogecoin capital gains to pay adoption fees at Florida shelter

An anonymous donor made it easier for a Daytona Beach animal shelter to find homes for dogs by paying for numerous adoption fees using the iconic meme-cryptocurrency Dogecoin.

Once valued at less than a penny per token on cryptocurrency exchanges, Dogecoin has soared in popularity and value to all-time highs of 43 cents per token due to its viral appeal.

The digital currency also received an added buffer of support from Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has said, “Dogecoin is the people’s crypto.”

Halifax Humane Society Community Outreach Director Barry Kukes said a woman entered the shelter Saturday and paid all the adoption fees for dogs ready to be adopted out, according to Fox-35 Orlando.

“Basically, [she] had made a very wise investment in some cryptocurrency and had a windfall and said it changed her life, that she wanted to do something nice,” he said.

The woman who donated to the shelter did not want to be identified and listed her donation as “Dogecoin.”

The donation came at the right time, as the shelter had just taken in 42 dogs from a suspected dog-fighting ring in Daytona Beach, Kukes said.

Space is always needed for animals as many come and go at irregular paces, the shelter director said. Other charitable organizations often make contributions to help large numbers of dogs get adopted more quickly.

“We’ve got some space now. We’re not at total capacity, but it changes almost on a daily basis. They come out as quickly as they come in,” Kukes said.

Many fans of the popular meme-based currency have anticipated April 20 as a day when Dogecoin would have another huge rally, as social media users have encouraged cryptocurrency buyers to make the price spike in celebration of the marijuana holiday. On Tuesday morning, the price per token stood at around 4 cents.
