A criminal complaint accuses Vargas of paying online hacking services roughly $4,000 to obtain usernames and passwords belonging to more than 30 people. The victims included 19 current police officers.
Prosecutors say the 42-year-old Vargas also illegally accessed a federal law enforcement database to snoop on two officers. Court papers didn’t make clear what he allegedly did with any of the personal information.
Vargas was to appear in federal court in Manhattan later Tuesday. The name of his lawyer wasn’t immediately available.
