Tech entrepreneur and newly-hired CNN contributor Andrew Yang confirmed to Buzzfeed News on Tuesday that he is considering a prospective bid to be the next mayor of New York City.
“You know, we’re looking at it,” he said.
New York’s mayoral election is scheduled for 2021, and the winner will replace Mayor Bill de Blasio, whose 2020 presidential bid failed to gain traction in a crowded Democratic field.
Yang is also being considered as a potential vice presidential pick by both former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former Vice President Joe Biden. It was reported last week that Bloomberg had reached out to Yang to gauge his interest in joining his ticket should he win the nomination, and Yang confirmed on Tuesday that Biden had also called seeking his support.
Though Yang has demurred the offer from Bloomberg, the billionaire said Yang would make a “very interesting candidate” in the mayoral field and suspected he could leverage his supporter base to make a serious run.
Yang has yet to endorse a candidate remaining in the 2020 race, although he said, “Something could change at any moment.”
