Close quarters: Democratic NYC mayor shared residence with police official earning huge salary

New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) is a longtime friend and associate to a senior New York Police Department official earning hundreds of thousands of dollars per year in her new role, records show.

The NYPD in May appointed retired 911 dispatcher Lisa White as deputy commissioner of employee relations, which involves overseeing 35,000 employees. White, who will earn over $241,000 annually, once shared a residence with Adams and has close ties with the mayor going back years.

White was a 911 dispatcher between 1995 and 2019, which is when she retired with a roughly $53,000 salary, according to government records. Adams rented a room from White between 2013 and 2017 at a Brooklyn apartment, the City reported. That same address is where White, in 2012, donated to Adams’s campaign for Brooklyn Borough president, according to campaign finance records.

“I’ve always lived in Brooklyn, always voted in my locale where I registered for, and there were some public safety issues that caused me to be concerned about being on Lafayette,” Adams said Tuesday at a press conference. “I’m not going to go into details of that.”

During Adams’s prior borough presidential campaign in 2013, White earned $1,000 as a consultant, the City reported. That money was sent to the address where she rented Adams a room, according to the outlet.

Between 2014 and 2021, White also was a treasurer and volunteer board member for the One Brooklyn Fund, a nonprofit organization using a facility at which Adams used to hold events, tax forms show. White filed a conflict of interest disclosure form in June noting this affiliation.

White also appears to have been a spokeswoman for 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, a group Adams co-founded, according to media clips from 1999 and 2000. The organization aims to work closely with the NYPD to fight against police brutality and racial profiling.

“Deputy Commissioner Lisa White filed for service retirement from the NYPD Communications Section in 2019, after a 29-year-career with the agency,” an NYPD spokesperson told the City. “Her hiring was in line with the NYPD’s standards for identifying those best suited for their roles within the department.”
