Police department fires employee who is a person of interest in homicide case

The Baltimore Police Department has fired its chief of fiscal services, who is a person of interest in an unspecified homicide investigation.

Dana Hayes, who served as the chief of fiscal services and was on the gun offender registry in 2019, was fired Tuesday, according to the department, which plans to investigate how he was hired in the first place.

“We are working to ascertain the answers to those questions ourselves,” Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said Wednesday when asked about why Hayes was hired, according to 13WJZ.

“There was a background investigation done, and the HR department did a background investigation,” he added. “It was missed. We are correcting that as we speak.”

After Hayes was fired, the department interviewed him in relation to a homicide investigation, but Harrison declined to specify which case. Harrison noted that Hayes is currently not a suspect in the case and that there has been no warrant issued for his arrest.

A spokesperson for the department declined to comment on whether Hayes was fired because of the homicide investigation, saying only “hiring or separation of employees” is considered a personnel record under the Maryland Public Information Act and that the department is not permitted to disclose such records.
