‘We live in a democracy’: Melania Trump defends students who booed her

First lady Melania Trump said she would not be deterred by the negative reaction she received from a roomful of students in Baltimore, Maryland, when she took the stage to give a speech about youth opioid abuse.

A vocal crowd of middle school and high school students booed Trump during her brief speech at the B’More Youth Summit on Opioid Awareness on Tuesday.

Trump paused her remarks as the crowd simultaneously booed and cheered to say, “Hello, everyone.”

“We live in a democracy and everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the fact is we have a serious crisis in our country, and I remain committed to educating children on the dangers and deadly consequences of drug abuse,” Trump said later in a statement.

The first lady has used her platform to spotlight the dangers of opioid abuse and bullying and has rarely elicited a negative crowd reaction during her solo events.

President Trump, however, received a wave of backlash over the summer when he described the city of Baltimore as “rat and rodent infested.”
