Conway walks back statement that Trump won’t release tax returns because ‘people didn’t care’

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway on Monday walked back her comment a day earlier that President Trump will not release his tax returns because “people don’t care.”

“On taxes, answers (& repeated questions) are same from campaign: POTUS is under audit and will not release until that is completed,” Conway tweeted Monday morning.

On ABC Sunday, Conway said Trump will not release his tax returns because it had been “litigated” during the campaign and “people didn’t care.” It was a change from the oft-repeated statement that Trump is under audit by the Internal Revenue Service and couldn’t release his returns.

The law does not bar people who are under audit by the IRS from releasing their tax returns.

Democrats and the press have ripped Trump for not releasing his tax returns. He’s one of the first presidents, and presidential candidates, to not release his tax returns in the modern era.

More than 250,000 people have signed a White House petition asking Trump to release his tax returns, well beyond the 100,000-signature threshold that triggers a White House response.
