Matthew Whitaker told Lindsey Graham he intends to continue Mueller probe

Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker plans to allow special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into President Trump’s campaign and Russia to continue despite former Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ recent resignation, according to a report published late Thursday.

Whitaker told Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., in a meeting Thursday that he would continue the probe, the Associated Press reported.

Earlier this week, a senior Justice spokeswoman said the acting top prosecutor would determine based on department protocols and ethics officials’ opinions whether he should oversee the investigation or recuse himself as Sessions had.

Some Senate Democrats have called for Whitaker not to be privy to information obtained through Mueller’s investigation, in part because of his past criticism of it.

Rod Rosenstein is still serving as deputy secretary at DOJ. He recently told Congress there was no reason for the probe to be dropped if Sessions left his position.
