Fairfax police: Possible link among regional bank heists

Police say a bank robbery suspect responsible for two heists in Fairfax County also could have struck in Falls Church, Alexandria and Prince William County.

The man robbed a Chevy Chase Bank in Springfield on May 20 and a Giant Food bank in Centreville on July 8.

In the first incident, he reportedly approached the teller, demanded money and fled. In the second, he handed the teller a note demanding cash.

There were no injuries in either robbery and no weapon was ever produced, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Descriptions of the suspect and the robberies bear similarities to others in the region.

In Prince William County, a Provident Bank in Woodbridge was robbed Dec. 5 by a note-brandishing suspect.

“There is a possibility it could be the same person” as the Fairfax County suspect, said Prince William police spokesman John Bogert.

Falls Church police said in June they were coordinating with detectives in Fairfax County and Alexandria on a possible link to the May 1 robbery of a Chevy Chase Bank on West Broad Street.

At the time, however, police from the two other jurisdictions would not comment on any potential connections.

There have been 26 robberies in Fairfax County this year, an increase over last year, according to Fairfax County Police spokeswoman Shelley Broderick.

In several instances, one person is suspected of committing more than one robbery. None have resulted in injuries.
