President Trump argued Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., is “taking over” the Democratic Party, comments that come after Waters advocated for liberals to heckle members of his administration in public settings.
Trump’s remarks came during a rally in Fargo, N.D., Wednesday evening, as he criticized Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., and accused her of joining forces with Democrats Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California.
“When Heidi ran for office she promised to be an independent vote for the people of North Dakota,” Trump told the Fargo crowd. “Instead, she went to Washington and immediately joined Chuck — you know who Chuck is — and Nancy. And now they have a new leader. Who is the new leader? Maxine Waters is their new leader.”
“Maxine Waters,” Trump continued. “I think she’s taking over.”
Trump later claimed that “a vote for any Democrat in November is a vote for Schumer, Pelosi, and Maxine.”
Waters encouraged attendees at a rally in Los Angeles on Saturday to harass members of the Trump administration in public, comments that fellow Democrats pushed back upon.
“Already you have members of your Cabinet that are being booed out of restaurants. We have protesters taking up at their house who are saying, ‘No peace, no sleep. No peace, no sleep,’” Waters said.
“If you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd,” she added. “And you push back on them. Tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere!”
