America is officially great again.
Led by captain Alexander Ovechkin, the Washington Capitals defeated the Las Vegas Golden Knights Thursday night to take home the team’s first ever Stanley Cup.
The title marks D.C.’s first major sports championship since the Redskins defeated the Buffalo Bills to win the Super Bowl in 1992.
After losing the first game on the road in Vegas, Washington won the next three games and jumped out to an initial lead in game 4 after forward Jakub Vrana netted the game’s first goal in the second period. A flurry of goals followed Vrana’s strike — Nate Schmidt, David Perron for Vegas and Ovechkin for Washington — and Vegas eventually took a 3-2 lead heading into the third period, courtesy of Reilly Smith.
Then, the Caps came out firing in the final period.
Winger Devante Smith-Pelly — who made headlines Wednesday by suggesting he would skip a visit to the White House — tied the game halfway through the third, and Lars Eller gave the Capitals their final, 4-3 lead less than three minutes later.
Following the game, Ovechkin was additionally named Stanley Cup MVP. His Thursday night goal was his 15th of the 2018 playoffs, the high mark among all players.
