The White House pushed back against Sen. Martin Heinrich’s (D-NM) rebuke of President Donald Trump’s call to reinstate the national celebration of Columbus Day, posting an iconic clip from The Sopranos television series.
Trump announced on Sunday that he would bring back Columbus Day, the second Monday in October, to celebrate Christopher Columbus discovering the United States, “back from the ashes.” On Monday morning, Heinrich, who previously advocated reframing the holiday as “Indigenous Peoples’ Day,” wrote on X that Trump’s push for Columbus Day would not be recognized in New Mexico. The White House’s Rapid Response X account responded with a clip of Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) discussing the explorer.
