An interview between Chris Matthews and two “Saturday Night Live” cast members took an odd turn Thursday when the MSNBC host repeatedly asked the black guest to name the “funniest black guy.”
The moment occurred as Matthews spoke with “SNL’s” Michael Che, who is black, and Colin Jost, who is not.
“Who’s the funniest black guy?” Matthews asked Che, his question coming suddenly in the middle of their group discussion.
There was a slight pause, and Che answered, “You know what, I’m going to say Cosby so nobody gets mad at you. Now that’ll be the headline.”
Matthews then followed up with a comment about not speaking ill of “the dead,” which left his guests visibly confused.
The conversation moved on briefly to the topic of Dr. Ben Carson’s speech at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, and they spoke about the GOP nominee, Donald Trump, but it wasn’t long before Matthews circled back to Che with a question about funny black men.
“It’s Chris Rock, right? Funniest black guy?” the cable news asked at the end of the interview as he grabbed Che’s shoulder.
The two confused cast members laughed, and MSNBC cut to commercial.
