Black smoke rose out of the Sistine Chapel chimney Wednesday evening, two hours after it was expected to be seen, and a signal that the first vote of the conclave failed to reach the two-thirds majority necessary for a new pope.

It was a bizarre scene as the ongoing live feed broadcast on massive screens at the front of St. Peter’s Square blacked out briefly just before the smoke appeared, prompting confusion and eventually groans.
