Jerry Falwell Jr., chancellor and president of Liberty University in Lynchburg, says he supports Gov. Bob McDonnell’s effort to privatize Virginia’s state-run liquor stores.

“I support Governor Bob McDonnell’s proposal to privatize Virginia’s ABC stores primarily because I believe that our founders intended a much more limited role for government than what we have today,” he said. “In my view, Virginia’s private sector, its families, churches and businesses will be better served and protected by eliminating government-sanctioned monopolies.”

Liberty University, founded by Falwell’s father, Jerry Falwell, is the world’s largest Christian university.

A coalition of faith-based groups, citing potential social consequences with tripling the number of outlets in the state that sell hard liquor, has come out against the proposal.
