Rain closes seven roads in Carroll

Torrential downpours flooded and closed at least seven roads, mostly in the northwestern and southwestern portions of Carroll County this week, as forecasts call for additional showers today.

The county?s Office of Public Safety and Support Services reported that closed roads Wednesday in the area north of Westminster included:

» Pleasant Valley Road, east of Hughes Shop Road

» Unger Road, between Route 214 and Mayberry Road

Sunset and Marriottsville roads in Sykesville were shut down after heavy storms, county spokeswoman Vivian Laxton said.

Sykesville police had to discourage a young man from “riding the rapids” on an inner tube on the Patapsco River, Cpl. Shawn Kilgore said.

Flooded banks of the same river forced the evacuation of a girl and her grandmother Tuesday from a residence in the 3900 block of Twin Arch Road in Mount Airy near the Howard County line, but spillover was no longer a problem Wednesday, police said.

“Water receded almost as quickly as it went up,” said Doug Alexander, a spokesman for the Mount Airy Fire Department.

Keysville, Sixes Bridge and Mumma Ford roads, all near Frederick County, also were closed.

The National Weather Service calls for a chance of scattered thunderstorms after 2 p.m. today.
