Youngkin and Northam meet to begin transition of power

Virginia Gov.-elect Glenn Youngkin, a Republican, met with Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam on Thursday for the first time since Youngkin’s victory. The two met at the Executive Mansion in Richmond, Virginia, where Northam congratulated Youngkin on his win and welcomed the governor-elect and his wife to their “new home.”

“We talked about a number of things,” Northam said. “But, first of all, just our pride and the privilege to be 73rd governor and, Mr. Youngkin, the 74th governor of the commonwealth of Virginia.”

Both men took pride in having “wonderful” wives from Texas as first ladies.

“The governor said that we share one very important moment,” Youngkin said. “And that is we both married up in a big way.”

Northam also joked about their mutual love for basketball.

Northam played in high school and recognized Youngkin’s time as a player at Rice University.

“Obviously, his career progressed a lot farther,” the governor said.

Northam thanked the press, the first ladies of Virginia, the mansion staff, museums, and the executive protection unit, which protects the governor.

“They have done such a wonderful job,” he said. “There are no finer men and women.”

Northam gifted Youngkin and his wife challenge coins and welcomed the governor-elect to the office.

“To be welcomed with such grace into this home is incredibly humbling,” Youngkin said. “I just want to thank you for the incredibly cooperative way that you have expressed you’re going to help us.”

There is much work to be done, and “Day One is going to come fast,” he said.

Youngkin promised to be “incredibly open and accessible” to the press.

“One of the things that has excited me most during this campaign but also as we head forward is just the open interaction that we have,” he said. “We are going to have a lot to talk about because we are going to be moving forward with real pace.”
