Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) has written Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) an apology after he said, “We’re going to send her back to be with him in California,” the day of her husband’s brutal assault with a hammer, which required surgery on his skull.
“@GlennYoungkin has sent @SpeakerPelosi a hand-written note apologizing for his remarks about the speaker in the wake of the attack on Paul Pelosi,” tweeted Punchbowl News founder Jake Sherman on Wednesday morning.

News broke of the assault on Pelosi’s husband, Paul, on Oct. 28. Youngkin mentioned the assault during a campaign event for Republican congressional candidate Yesli Vega, who lost her race Tuesday to incumbent Abigail Spanberger (D-VA). “There’s no room for violence anywhere,” he told the crowd.
“But we’re going to send her back to be with him in California,” the governor added.

The comment was criticized and marked a contrast between the governor and several Republicans who were condemning the attack in the most serious of terms. The Virginia Democrats account slammed his remark, adding, “The Speakers husband was brutally attacked and currently fighting for his life and Youngkin is making jokes.”
Governor Youngkin’s comments are absolutely disgusting and unbecoming.

Afterward, news anchor Greta Van Susteren asked Youngkin if he wanted a “do-over” or if he was “sorry” following the remark, but Youngkin opted against making an apology. He did reiterate that violence is wrong and that the speaker’s husband is in his prayers.

The governor’s office did not confirm the report of Youngkin’s apology letter, but referred the Washington Examiner to a statement from the governor.
“My full intention on my comments was to categorically state that violence and the kind of violence that was perpetrated against Speaker Pelosi’s husband is not just unacceptable, it’s atrocious. And I didn’t do a great job with that. And so listen, it was a personal note and it was one between me and the speaker, just to reflect those sentiments,” Youngkin said a statement.

Recently, Pelosi sat down for an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, where she told him her decision regarding retirement has been influenced by the attack.
“I have to say my decision will be affected about what happened the last week or two,” she said of her status if the Democratic Party is to lose control of the House of Representatives.
