Donald Trump slammed Baltimore State Attorney Marilyn Mosby as “a disgrace” shortly after she dropped charges against the remaining police officers set to face trial over the death of Freddie Gray.
Following the acquittal of three officers involved in the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, who died last April after sustaining a neck injury while in police custody, Mosby announced Wednesday that she was dropping charges faced by three additional officers.
“We could try this case 100 times, and cases just like it, and we would still end up with the same result,” Mosby told reporters.
“I do have a reaction to the prosecutor in Baltimore who indicted those police officers. I think she ought to prosecute herself. OK, that’s my reaction,” Trump responded when asked about Mosby’s decision during a press conference Wednesday.
“I think it was disgraceful what she did and the way she did it … I give a lot of respect and a lot of credit to those police officers who probably could have made a deal. I give a lot of respect, a lot of credit that they stuck it out,” Trump said of the three officers who stood trial. “And you had victory after victory after victory [after] she prosecuted what she thought were the best cases first.”
“She should prosecute herself. She should be held accountable,” he repeated.
Trump, who’s made a point to commend law enforcement officials across the country in the wake of several police shootings, noted that “there are times when police officers behave very badly, but you have to get the right time.”
“This was not one of those times,” he said. “And I think that she is a disgrace to the world of prosecutors for what she did.”
