Thirty-two public schools in Prince George’s County remained closed on Thursday as engineers checked for structural damage from Tuesday’s earthquake.
“The safety of our students, teachers and staff is our number one priority,” Superintendent William Hite Jr. said.“We are working as quickly as possible to get the necessary building inspections completed so that school can resume for all students.”
There are 198 public schools in Prince George’s. After the 5.8-magnitude earthquake, school officials said at least 37 schools sustained damage.
In the District, just one campus — School Without Walls Senior High School in Foggy Bottom — was too damaged to open on Thursday.
Teams repaired “cosmetic” issues from the quake at Burrville Elementary, MacFarland Middle and Columbia Heights Education Campus while students were in class on Thursday.
Walls is expected to remain closed through Friday and possibly into next week, Mayor Vincent Gray said.
