A woman being interviewed on MSNBC described Hillary Clinton as “plastic” on Tuesday, after she was asked about the lack of support Clinton has among women under 30.
“The only word that comes to mind when I think of Hillary [Clinton] is plastic,” said Thea Matthews, who is backing challenger Bernie Sanders, in an MSNBC group interview broadcast on Tuesday.
NBC’s Chris Jansing explained she arranged the discussion because she wanted to learn “what they thought the lack of appeal was for women and what she could do to change it if she’s the nominee.”
“This is a particularly interesting group because much to many people’s surprise, Bernie Sanders is doing extraordinarily well with women under 30, not Hillary Clinton,” said Jansing. He said Trump gets “more than double the number of votes” in this “critical voting group.”
Despite praising Hillary Clinton as a trailblazer for women and a proponent of many of their concerns, the consensus among participants in the roundtable was that Clinton appears inauthentic.
Fellow Sanders supporter Paulina Maldonado said she “a lot of good feelings” for “vintage Hillary,” but after years of compromising “you don’t know where [Clinton] stands anymore.”
Jessica del Castillo said her chosen candidate has “put on a lot of masks … to protect herself, but Clinton is “going to have to open back up” if she wants to gain votes from young women.
“I think Hillary [Clinton] has to do a better job of connecting her struggle as a woman to… explaining how her role in politics and public service has been impacted by her gender,” said Castillo.
One undecided voter demanded Clinton present detailed policy solutions addressing veterans affairs and prison issues.
“Show me your vision … not in sound bites and not in vague terms,” said participant Claire White.
