The Romanian hacker who claimed to breach Hillary Clinton’s private server and revealed her surreptitious use of a private email address was sentenced Thursday to the maximum term in prison.
Marcel Lazar, known online as the original Guccifer, was sentenced in Alexandria, Va., to 52 months by U.S. District Judge James C. Cacheris. Guccifer was extradited from a Romanian prison in 2014, where he is expected to serve seven more years following his American release.

Guccifer was convicted on charges of hacking more than 100 prominent Americans, including former secretary of state Colin Powell and a sister to former President George W. Bush. He had claimed to hack Hillary Clinton during her term as secretary of state, though that was never proven.
He did successfully hack Sidney Blumenthal, a Clinton aide. The breach led to the first revelation of Clinton’s use of the private clintonemail.com domain.
