Donald Trump won North Carolina in Tuesday’s presidential election, adding a battleground state to his column.
Democratic VP nominee Tim Kaine identified the Tar Heel State on Tuesday morning as one of four “checkmate states” that he said would mean Hillary Clinton wins the White House. The other three states he listed included Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
Clinton’s loss gives Trump a much needed victory. North Carolina served as a toss-up state headed into Election Day, as RealClearPolitics’ average of statewide polls gave Trump a 1-percentage-point advantage.
Republican incumbent Richard Burr won re-election to the Senate from the state, which also has a competitive gubernatorial election. Burr’s Senate campaign could go a long way to determining whether Republicans keep control of the Senate in 2017.
