Turkey car bombs: Six killed, 219 injured

Two car bomb explosions rocked eastern Turkey on Thursday, killing six and injuring at least 219 others.

One car bomb in the city of Van killed one police officer and two civilians, and wounded 73 others.

Hours later, an explosion hit Elazig, killing at least three police officers and wounding 146 people.

The Turkish government blamed the Kurdish militant group, the PKK. The PKK has been targeting police in the Kurdish southeast since a government cease-fire broke down in 2015.

However, no one has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks.

This is the fifth attack in Turkey in recent weeks. At least eight people were killed in two attacks on police vehicles in nearby Diyarbakir and Kiziltepe last week.

Violence has rocked Turkey in the past year, including attacks on its biggest cities, Ankara and Istanbul.

Last month, Turkish Armed Forces attempted a coup to remove President Recep Tayyip Erdogan from office. It failed, and on Wednesday, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said more than 40,000 people have been detained amid ongoing federal investigations into who was behind the July 15 coup attempt.
